Janmashtami

Midnight aarti for Kanudo, and sweets for the whole Satam-Atham week.

Jamnagar is a short drive from Dwarka, and Janmashtami here is never just one day — it is the whole Satam-Atham stretch of fairs, fasting and the midnight birth of Krishna. Our sweets are made to sit on the prasad table and in the tin through all of it.

Treats for Janmashtami

Satam-Atham in Saurashtra

In Saurashtra, Janmashtami comes with a whole week around it. Randhan Chhath is spent cooking, because on Shitala Satam the stove stays cold and families eat the food made the day before. Then comes Atham — Krishna's birthday — with lok melas in every town, and Dwarka, just up the coast from Jamnagar, draws pilgrims from across the country.

The midnight celebration

Many devotees fast through the day. At midnight the cradle is rocked, the aarti rings out with "Nand gher anand bhayo", and Kanudo is offered panjiri, makhan-mishri, panchamrut and fruit. In the morning, dahi handi and the parna (breaking of the fast) follow.

How DeshÉ fits in

  • Khajur Pak — date and dry-fruit squares with no added sugar and no wheat flour; many families keep it in the prasad thali.
  • Nanakhatai — made a day or more ahead and keeps well in a tin, which makes it a natural fit for Shitala Satam, when nothing is cooked. It contains wheat flour, so it is not farali.
  • Masala Pak — less of a seasonal fit in August, but many families still like a piece of pak in the prasad.

Gifting ideas

A box of Khajur Pak for relatives you visit during the melas, or nanakhatai to fill the Satam tin. Enquire about a week before Randhan Chhath.

  • Khajur Pak is made from dates and dry fruit without wheat flour, and many families take it while fasting. Nanakhatai contains wheat flour, so it is not farali. Please check each ingredient list against your own practice.
